Because he wanted to separate good from evil part of his body.

He looked in a mirror. He couldn't see the image of his face, but of a young man again. This man was Edward Hyde.

He was the evil part from Dr. Jekyll.

He felt very strange and he couldn't control Hyde with a long time.
